Improving Data on LGBTQ Health: Addressing Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity (SOGI)

Category: LGBT Health Equity
LGBT HealthLink and our Community Advisory Council members have put together a helpful White Paper on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data collection providing a comparison analysis of existing practices of asking SOGI questions on surveys. In addition to a call to action, we provide recommendations for asking SOGI question on surveys.
If you plan to create surveys for collecting population-level data in communities, healthcare systems, department of health, and colleges/universities, here are some recommended TIPS:
- Questions related to gender identity and sexual orientation should be asked on surveys.
- These questions should be optional.
- Gender identity and sexual orientation are different aspects of personal identity and therefore, should not be combined into one question.
Why ask sexual orientation and gender identity questions on surveys?
- Approximately, 10 million people in the United States identify outside of gender and sexual binaries, and especially a growing number of youth!
- Remember to use the data collected to improve your organization’s impact of support services and programs for LGBTQ people!
- You can capture and analyze the experience of LGBTQ people, especially in today challenging social and environmental changes.
